10" Circular Stitched Blackened Cherry Tray

The design of this tray is informed by Japanese magewappa and Scandinavian svepask boxes. The wooden band that forms the sides is first steam bent, the tail, or tongue, is then carved with a knife, glued in place, drilled and stitched with waxed linen thread. The tray bottom is then fit and fastened with small wooden pegs before final sanding and finishing.

The blackening is achieved by impregnating the wood with a solution high in tannin and then applying iron acetate — a similar method was used in creating iron gall ink between the 5th and early 20th centuries.

Cherry, cherry veneered ply, waxed linen thread, hard wax oil.
